Why Mailing Lists? Mailing lists enable people with similar interests from all over the world to communicate and share information with each other regardless of constraints of time and space. This has enabled the formation of many 'virtual communities' based on on-line technologies.

There are many people interested in the same topics, issues, questions, opportunities, ideas, and so on. Information can be shared through distribution lists. However, in order to make a group more publically accessible, and to benefit from the contributions of people who would not be on your distribution lists, the idea of the mailing list was born.

Basic Concept Of The Mailing List

To use Mailing Lists all you need is an email address and the ability to send and receive email.

The concept is very similar to that of a distribution list, where one message is sent to many people. The differences are that:

there is an administrative email address to which you send an email command to join or leave the mailing list;
there is another email address called the list address. Whenever anyone sends an e-mail message to it, this message is distributed automatically to everyone on the mailing list. If the list is moderated (i.e. someone checks the messages) then this process may not be as quick.

What is Yahoo! Groups?

Yahoo! Groups is a free service that allows you to bring together family, friends, and associates through a web site and email group. You don't need to know HTML to create your own site. Yahoo! Groups offer a convenient way to connect with others who share the same interests and ideas.

There are hundreds of thousands of email groups that you can join in an easy-to-use, privacy-protected, and spam-protected environment. You can use the Yahoo! Groups service at our web site or through any email program.
